Why the cabinets matter most
They're the boxes everything else hangs on, and they're the part people skimp on and regret. Rigid, factory-built units outlast flat-pack in a family kitchen. If yours are sound, keeping them and changing what's on the front is where the big savings are.

Put 15% aside. Old kitchens hide things: a soft floor under the sink, pipes in the wrong place, a wall that isn't square.
