The age of Laois's kitchens
How old a house is tells you a lot about what the remodel costs. From the CSO's Census 2022, with the shares worked out by us:
- 35%of Laois homes were built 2001 to 2010 (10,956)
- 32%were built before 1981
- 8%were built since 2011
- 55%are detached houses
- 29%are semi-detached
- 71%are owner-occupied
What that means for your remodel
- 2000s kitchens are due. 35% of Laois homes were built between 2001 and 2010 (10,956 homes), so their kitchens are 15 to 25 years old. Where the units are sound, a refresh at €1,350 to €4,000 does it; where the boards under the sink have swollen, it's a new kitchen.
- Bigger kitchens. 55% of homes in Laois are detached, against 41% nationally. A bigger room means more units and a longer worktop: a large open-plan kitchen with an island runs €25,000 to €50,000, a kitchen of 8 to 10 metres €12,000 to €18,000 mid-range.
- Semis. 29% of Laois homes are semi-detached. A mid-range kitchen in a three- or four-bed semi is €12,000 to €22,000, most of it the units and the worktop.
- Newer homes. 2,623 Laois homes were built since 2011. Builder's kitchens often have good units and plain doors: a respray or new doors and a stone worktop lifts them for a fraction of a new kitchen.
